A prior owner had drilled out the muffler to try and improve the sound, instead it sounded like a bike with holes in the muffler. The pipe on the GS500 doesn’t take a slip-on well as it has a bend right at where the muffler mounts, and used stock exhausts started around $100 for a system with rust & dents. So fixing what I had seemed to make the most sense.

I welded a cap on the end of the muffler, drilled it out for the center pipe and welded that up too. Then it got a quick coat of high-temp paint. Looks a bit lumpy up close but not too bad, and fixed the muffler sound.

Ever thought about stuffing it with steel wool? I heard that that works, but never got around to trying it. I’ll probably do it to Charlie once I get a new engine in it.

Steel wool is pretty flammable. It works to muffle sound, until...you know, fire.

Don’t ask how I know.

Muffler doesn’t come apart? Seems like if you could have gotten to the backside of the cap you could have put some metal back there and avoided the lumpyness. Not criticizing; just curious.

The packing wasn’t the problem, the three extra holes were. The muffler may come apart, but I couldn’t find any info about doing so online.

Lol. I always heard of that being used when there are noise restrictions on track or something, but not the fire bit. How much time does it give you? Would it last for a track day if the car’s too loud?

Hmm...it would probably last, but I doubt most tech guys would be alright with it. The better solution I’ve seen on track is temporarily installing turn down tips on the exhaust, pointed away from wherever decibels are measured. I’ve seen a whole lot of people do this to make sound at Mazda Raceway.
